Full Cast Audio Books - What Are They And How Are They Different?

Today I released my first full cast audio book: The American Fathers Episode 1: Swept Away. A full cast audio book is a recording of a book performed by a cast of actors. SWEPT AWAY's cast includes: Adrianne Cury, Amy Montgomery, Fawzia Mirza, Deb Doetzer, and Scott Duff

Most audio books are recorded by one actor, who performs the narration and the dialogue of all the characters. Full cast audio books are also called audio dramas, and they provide a listening experience similar to radio dramas, audio plays, radio plays, and radio theater.

The wikipedia entry for the term audiobook includes this definition: An audiobook is a recording of a text being read.

Some Audio Dramas, such as National Public Radio's broadcast of Star Wars, were recorded with the explicit intent of being broadcast over the radio. In recent years, more audio drama recordings are podcast over the internet.

Many full cast audio books were released as novels first, then recorded as dramatized audio books by a cast of actors. Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods was first released as an audio book in 2001, but was released again as a full cast audio book in 2011. The resurgence of audio storytelling is widely attributed to advances in mobile technologies such as smart phones, tablets, and multimedia entertainment systems in cars also known as connected car platforms.

Full cast audio books are not necessarily easy to find, as evidenced by this discussion on Reddit:

Hey r/audiobooks, I really love audiobooks, and my favorites are ones with a full cast for voices. I'm not superpickie, even with an individual reader(I liked Roy Dotrice's reading of ASoIaF, which seems to be consistently panned here). I did really love the "His Dark Materials" trilogy cast recordings too.

this discussion on Quara:

Is there a list of dramatized (full cast) audio books?

The BBC aired some really good radio dramas and full cast audio books, however I'd like to know if anybody is maintaining a list of dramatized audio books by category (mystery, sci-fi, etc.).

and this discussion on Goodreads:

Are there any good audiobooks out there which feature a full cast? Preferably something that's more like an old-timey radio show with sound FX and music, but just multiple actors would be good, too.

I started a list of full cast audio books on Goodreads. Thanks to AmberBug, Ann, and Bruce, my Goodreads list is the most comprehensive list of full cast audio books on the web.

Full cast audio books are not common in the U.S. but seem to be much more common in England. The BBC Stations Radio 3, Radio 4, and Radio 4 Extra have broadcast such productions as Neuromancer.
